NEW DELHI, July 3 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and two others were injured after a boundary wall of a housing society collapsed amid heavy rains in western Indian city of Mumbai, officials said Tuesday.

According to officials, the 30-feet long compound wall located in Patlipada area of Thane collapsed on at least four houses Monday night.

"One person died on the spot, while as a woman and a child were seriously injured after the wall collapsed on houses," Santosh Kadam, a disaster management cell official in Thane said. "We immediately rushed men and machinery to the spot to carry out rescue work. The injured were admitted to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa."

The incident triggered panic in the area, following which officials evacuated five houses near the mishap site as a precautionary measure.

Officials said remaining portion of the compound wall, which was likely to endanger more lives, was demolished by the civic authorities using earth movers.

Rains lashed parts of Mumbai since Monday night, triggering water logging in several areas.

India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rain in the city in next two days while forecasting rainfall throughout the week.
