PHNOM PENH, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Fish accounted for 76 percent of household protein intake in Cambodia, as the fisheries sector played a crucial role in ensuring food security and supporting about 2 million jobs nationwide, said a joint press release on Thursday.
The figures were revealed when the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) hosted a "Cambodia's Fish Cuisine" event in Phnom Penh on Wednesday evening.
"Cambodia's fisheries resources have been rich and diverse from ancient times to the present, as reflected in the fish carvings on the walls of Angkor Wat and Bayon Temples," MAFF's Minister Dith Tina said.
"This abundance not only provides food for the people, ensuring food security and nutrition, but it's also the resource to improve the livelihoods of fisherfolk and aquaculture farmers," he added.
Tina said the MAFF is working with partners and organizations to enhance fisheries added-value through processing into high-quality, nutritious, and flavorful dishes that contribute to better health for the consumers.
According to the press release, traditional Cambodian fish dishes like Prahok Ktes, a dipping sauce made from fermented fish, minced pork, and some ingredients; PahOrk, a kind of traditional fermented fish; dried fish, and smoked fish are widely cherished. ■
