BANGKOK, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Thailand has targeted Cambodia's military targets during its operation on Thursday, a Thai army spokesperson said.
Thai army spokesperson Winthai Suvaree told a press briefing that the army has acted in line with the UN Charter, which permits self-defense against armed attacks. The Thai response has focused solely on neutralizing military targets, he said.
He confirmed that F-16 fighter jets were sent in two rounds of airstrikes against Cambodia as part of a longer-range support operation.
Winthai called for diplomatic talks to find peaceful solutions to the conflict, expressing hope for a swift and brief conclusion.
The situation escalated following skirmishes that began Thursday morning. The two sides both blamed the other side for initiating the firing.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called on Thailand to immediately cease all hostilities, withdraw its forces to its side of the border, and refrain from any further provocative actions which could escalate the situation.
Hun Manet accused Thailand of violating the basic principles of international law. ■
