VILNIUS, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Lithuania is in talks with the United States on establishing a regional cyber security center in Kaunas, the Baltic country's second largest city, said the senior adviser to the Lithuanian president, Nerijus Aleksiejunas, on Wednesday.

According to Aleksiejunas, Lithuania is ready to take leadership in the area of cyber security both in the European Union (EU) and possibly cooperating with the United States in this area.

"As we create rapid response cyber security forces in the EU, we are also talking with the U.S. about establishing a regional cyber security center in Lithuania," Aleksiejunas was quoted as saying by local media.

Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite, together with leaders of Latvia and Estonia, met with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday in Washington.

According to Aleksiejunas, the visit was a "good chance" to introduce Lithuania's achievements in security.

Meanwhile, Edvinas Kerza, Lithuania's vice minister of defence, said the center should become a basis for creating measures of cyber security and implementing research and development.

According to the plan, cyber security officers from the Pennsylvania National Guard could cooperate with the center in Kaunas.

According to Kerza, Lithuania is currently waiting for an answer from the U.S. Department of Defence at the Pentagon.

The Lithuanian authorities also expect that activities of the EU rapid response cyber security forces could be coordinated from the center in Kaunas. Last year, the EU welcomed this Lithuanian initiative.
